In the past year and a half, everything we know about our workspaces has been turned upside down. Some of us are still working from home, some are back in the office, and some are back and forth. The methods in which we work effectively have been put to the test, and it’s time to adapt. However, for some people it means starting over in a completely new environment. How can we maximize our productivity when starting from scratch? Here are a few of our tips for building a productive workspace!
- Natural Light
Working in a space with more natural light has been proven in multiple studies to boost employee morale, increase productivity, and contribute to overall health and well-being. If you don’t have a workspace near a window, get a few lamps to brighten the room!
2. Choose a Productive Layout
A “productive” layout can mean many things to many people, but you should pick a layout that works for you. The different devices you have and tasks you need to complete factor into this. If you have a dual-monitor setup, a large PC, or just a lot of wires in general, you may want to opt for putting your desk against a wall. This is really good for cable management purposes as they are easier to hide and aren’t in the way. On top of that, mounting your monitors to the wall reduces desk space and makes for a more seamless feel.
If you are just working from a laptop, writing a paper, or have less cable connections, a desk that sits openly in the office is a great option. Not only is it efficient, but it looks great! Without having a bunch of wires and objects to manage, it can make a space feel much more open, and it’s nice to not have to be facing a wall all day.
Whatever your setup, your layout should be what works best for you. And don’t be afraid to change things up if you need to!
3. Organization Tools
Now that you have your layout, it’s time to channel your inner Marie Kondo and organize! Depending on your desk, you may have different storage options. If your desk doesn’t already have one, a simple file drawer can go a long way, or even a desk-top file organizer. If you don’t have a drawer for them, use a cute coffee mug to hold your pens! It adds a personal touch and keeps them all in one place. If you aren’t willing to sacrifice your favorite mug, there are also pen cups that come in all kinds of fun designs.
How many times have you gotten your mouse cord tangled with your keyboard, or accidentally kicked the computer cable out under the desk? Cable management is an organization tool that is frequently overlooked. Even the smallest changes can have a huge impact on the feel of your workspace. For general cable management, use tape strips and cable hooks under and behind your desk to keep everything tidy. If you have the option, opt for wireless or bluetooth mice and keyboards. Not only is it effective at creating more workspace, but it creates a more sleek design!
4. Plants
Plants are great for brightening up a room, but they are more than just a pretty face! Did you know that indoor plants can improve concentration and productivity by up to 15%? They also reduce stress and boost your mood. Scientific studies have shown that greener offices are happier and more efficient. If you don’t trust yourself as a pet parent, artificial plants can give a similar effect, and still make the room look great. Give your succulent a cute name and you’ve got a work companion for years!
5. Personalize
No one knows you like you do. Personalizing your space has many proven benefits to your productivity and mental health. Being in a space you enjoy helps get you into work mode and feel more emotionally connected to your work! It helps to have photos or reminders of things that motivate you. Many people like to have photos of their families or pets! The sky is the limit, but be sure to keep your personalization to a level where you can still work effectively. 8 frames of Fido can only motivate you so much! However you decide to decorate, always celebrate the things that make you uniquely you.
No matter how you choose to build your space, don’t be afraid to move things around. If you need to switch things up sometimes, do it! Whatever helps you the most is what will be best.
